Last Thursday night I went down the Cleveland Arms for the monthly Wolves night superbly hosted by Matt Murray. Alongside him were fellow keepers,Carl Ikeme and Phil Parkes plus Michael Oakes.
These nights always follow a tried and trusted formula which includes a small memorabilia auction of around 6 items. Having already got four matchworn shirts from Michael’s private collection not for one minute did I think he would bring along the rarest shirt from our first ever season in the Premier League 2003-04. The change Gold shirt was only worn twice, once in the cup by Andy Marshall at Arsenal in the Fa Cup and at Middlesbrough on November 1st in the league game by Michael Oakes.
Collectors will know that feeling when you are about to bid on something totally unique, try to act cool and not bothered but all the time your heart is racing. There were a couple of other Wolves collectors in the room and I was praying they didn’t realise just how rare and valuable it was, last thing you want after Christmas is to pay a small fortune out on another shirt ! Luckily they didn’t have a clue and I won both shirts Michael bought along for a lot less than I would have bid just for the one.
Both the shirts shown have now joined the other four in my collection worn by Michael for Wolves and a valuable lesson was learnt. Never give up on the ‘Holy Grail’ shirts because they can come along at a time and in a place you least expect !
